In the early 1990s, Coca-Cola made a dramatic shift in its advertising strategy when they launched the “Always Coca-Cola Campaign” which aimed to shift consumers’ perception of Coca-Cola to a drink that’s meant to be enjoyed all year round.  A huge part of this campaign was the roll out of advertisements that depicted a polar bear, as well as Santa Claus, enjoying bottles of Coca-Cola amidst a snowy wintery setting.  This campaign is one of the most referenced by marketing professors when it comes to shifting/enhancing brand perception.

This is a unique example of a branding strategy that wasn’t necessarily designed to attract new customers, but rather entice existing customers to consume their product in new circumstances, when it’s cold outside.
